Abstract Background The association of advanced digital image correlation (DIC) and numerical simulation has been widely used for inverse parameter identification. Objective It is attractive to develop an accurate DIC method sharing the common features with simulation, which can lead better synergy between experiments simulations. Methods A new meshfree (MF-DIC) using element free Galerkin (EFGM) proposed deformation measurement. EFGM a classical in studies, it directly construct shape function MF-DIC from set scattered nodes matching. principally different local global since does not rely on concept subset or element. Results In MF-DIC, $${C}^{1}$$ C 1 -continuous displacement every point constructed based group small support domain surrounding it. continuous strain map then be derived displacement, instead additional smoothing technique as required post-processing DIC. performance assessment Metrological Efficiency Indicator (MEI), defined Challenge 2.0, shows that yields excellent balance spatial resolution measurement both measurements. Conclusions Given shares computational mechanics, paves way enhanced simulations robust identification methods.
